AAtlanta's Sara Christian competed in the first NASCAR Strictly Stock race at the three-quarter mile Charlotte Speedway June 19, 1949. She qualified 13th for the 200-lapper, one place in front of Sam Rice, a pre-war winner of the Daytona beach race. The '49 Oldsmobile she drove was prepared by husband Frank, and she finished 13th in a field of 33. Later that year, she started 21st and finished sixth in a field of 44 at Langhorne Speedway - and winner Curtis Turner invited her to join him in Victory Lane.
